Calculating the Size of the Mooring rope/chain

The Mooring Lines (or cables) used to secure a ship at a berth. Mooring lines should be arranged as symmetrically as possible about the midship point of the ship. The Calculation of the size of the mooring rope is done same as the anchor size calculation. 

The step of Mooring line calculation are as follows

  1.  Calculation of the Vessel or ship displacement in fresh water and sea water by the formula available. For formulas click here.
  2. Calculation of Equipment Number by formulas.for formulas click here.
  3. From Equipment Number, find out the the specification of Mooring rope /chain from the table. For table click here.

From the Mooring line calculation, we find out the following:-

  • Mooring Lines
    • Number
    • Length of each mooring ropes (m)
    • Minimum breaking strength (KN)
